Aston Villa were wrong to allow Adama Traore to leave Villa Park, according to the club’s former manager Tim Sherwood.
Sherwood was in charge of Villa when Traore made the move from Barcelona in the summer of 2015.
The former Spain Under-19 international signed a five-year contract at Villa Park, but made just 12 appearances for the club before joining Middlesbrough for the 2016-17 campaign.
Traore has scored three times and registered six assists in 26 appearances in all competitions for Boro this term.
Sherwood has claimed that the 22-year-old has the ability to represent Premier League leaders Manchester City, and would thrive at the Etihad Stadium under Pep Guardiola if given the chance.
Sherwood told Sky Sports:
“He could go and play for Manchester City tomorrow. Not Manchester United as he’s not necessarily a Jose Mourinho player, but he could be a Pep Guardiola player and play free and loose.
“He could probably set the world alight. He has got those qualities. He is eye-catching and he gets people on the edge of their seats.”
Traore, who is valued at £7.2m by transfermarkt.co.uk, has a contract with Boro until the summer of 2020.
The versatile attacker was sent off just 37 minutes into his team’s 3-3 draw with struggling Sunderland in the Championship last weekend.
