Sheffield Wednesday’s pursuit of Premier League striker Connor Wickham has hit a bump after events this weekend, which was topped off by a damning update from The Sun’s Alan Nixon.
What’s he said?
While the Owls were getting thumped by Blackburn Rovers at Hillsborough on Saturday afternoon, Wickham came off the bench to contribute towards Crystal Palace getting a valuable point up at Manchester City.
Garry Monk’s desire to add a striker was already causing alarm bells in south Yorkshire, and after the 5-0 devastation in top goalscorer Steven Fletcher’s continued absence, the need has ramped up tenfold.
However, if they are to land one of their targets, they’ll have to stump up more financially as Nixon claims their offer for Wickham isn’t good enough.
He said:
Another blow
Wednesday’s inconsistencies were exploited once again on Saturday afternoon, and things are certainly looking like they’ll get much worse before it gets better as they still haven’t been able to clinch that Fletcher replacement.
His 12 goals are a big miss in this side as no other player has scored more than three times, and even though the Blackburn drubbing can be somewhat written off as they were down to ten for the majority of the match, it still highlights a cause for concern.
Monk has already confirmed that they will need to operate the loan market this month, which you can only presume is down to the inability to be able to splash out a transfer fee on a player, but they still need to be able to afford a players wages if they are to loan them.
Can you remember how much each of these transfer icons cost? Only experts will get 100% on our quiz…
If the Owls truly want Wickham before the window closes in less than two weeks time, then they will have to improve their current offer to get him. Palace bringing in Cenk Tosun should have strengthened their case to land him.
The door is surely there to be unlocked if Dejphon Chansiri backs his manager.
And in other news, the prolific marksman that bagged 24 goals in this division last season is reportedly not a target for Monk this month…
