According to a recent report from The Liverpool Echo, Divock Origi could be set for a move away come the New Year. The 23-year-old currently plays his football at Premier League giants Liverpool and has done so since leaving Lille for Anfield back in 2014, although a lack of first team football under manager Jurgen Klopp has called his future at the club into question.
And reports suggest that Turkish giants Galatasaray are keen on the Belgium international, as should Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, as title number 55 would certainly be on for the Gers were the Liverpool legend to lure the £9 million-rated outcast (as per Transfermarkt) to Ibrox.
The Breakdown
Ultimately, Gerrard made several big changes to his playing squad over the summer upon appointment as Graeme Murty’s successor, with the 38-year-old signing no fewer than 15 players during the close season in a bid to bridge the gap to Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.
And bridge the gap they certainly have in the early phase of the campaign given they are just two points behind the Bhoys in the table, and as such are very much in title contention as they go in search of their 55th league crown, and first since 2011.
And while they have scored more goals than any other team in the Scottish Premiership this term, thus suggesting that attacking reinforcements shouldn’t be a priority come January, they have been heavily reliant on the goals of Alfredo Morelos, with his seven goals four more than the next top-scoring forward Kyle Lafferty.
And with the Gers seemingly struggling to keep the ball out of their net at the other end, having kept just one clean sheet in their last seven league matches, Gerrard may feel that he needs to compensate for those defensive frailties by adding further firepower – Origi would certainly bring that.
Yes, the Belgian star has struggled for regular football at Liverpool in recent years, having appeared just once under Klopp this term, but that shouldn’t detract from the 23-year-old’s efforts for the club in the years previous, netting ten times in the 2015/16 season, before adding 11 the campaign after in their run to fourth place in the Premier League table.
And with goals on loan at Bundesliga side Wolfsburg last term, Origi clearly has pedigree in some of the toughest leagues on the continent, which would stand him in good stead in the Scottish Premiership, the standard of which is widely regarded to be inferior to several top European leagues.
And with the Light Blues very much in title contention, that extra quality addition in January could make all the difference in their pursuit of number 55 – Origi would no doubt represent that quality addition, which is why Gerrard has to try and lure him to Ibrox come the New Year.
